Ashwagandha - also known as Indian Winter Cherry - is a shrub cultivated in India and North America whose roots have been used for thousands of years by Ayurvedic practitioners for various health issues. The root contains flavonoids and many active ingredients of the with anolide class.

Several studies over the past few years have looked into whether this herb has anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-stress, antioxidant, mind-boosting, immune-enhancing, and rejuvenating properties. Unfortunately, there isn't enough information to judge whether it is effective for any of them.

The roots of ashwagandha are used extensively in Ayurveda, the classical Indian system of medicine. In rodent studies ashwagandha has been shown to reduce anxiety and have a positive effect on mood. Ashwagandha is used as an “adaptogen” to help the body cope with daily stress, and as a general tonic.

Some people also use ashwagandha for improving thinking ability, decreasing pain and swelling (inflammation), and preventing the effects of aging. It is also used for fertility problems in men and women and also to increase sexual desire.

Although there are little known side effects to Ashwagandha, this might be due to the fact that few clinical studies have been conducted. In fact, that may be the biggest draw back to this ingredient - almost no clinical data.

The anecdotal evidence reported is right in line with that of a normal "placebo" and hence, a waste.

The other negativity with Ashwagandha in treating Anxiety & Depression, is that it's one of those herbs that claims to cure "everything". From arthritis to impotence, memory loss to panic attacks, fatigue to depression.

Personally, I don't like any herb or product that claims to have so many applications and yet, NO clinical data to back up anything.

Bottom Line: I don't recommend using this ingredient.
